Celcom Axiata has appointed Imri Mokhtar (pictured left) as its new COO to further strengthen the telco’s endeavor in operational excellence. Imri will be starting this new role on 1 May, and will be providing leadership in the technology, digital transformation and various corporate functions within the group. This includes network operations, digital enablement, IT, business transformations, program management, regulatory, legal and other corporate functions, driving operational excellence throughout the organisation. A+M has reached out to Celcom for additional information.

Imri was previously from Telekom Malaysia (TM), and brings with him over 24 years of experience. Imri’s last held position in TM as COO oversaw business operations of Unifi, TM ONE, TM Global clusters, as well as IT and Network of TM Group. Imri was also TM’s acting group CEO from November 2018 to June 2019.

Prior to Imri’s appointment as TM’s COO, he was the executive vice president of Unifi. He first started his career with TM in 1996 and re-joined TM in 2005, serving in various positions including as vice president, programme and performance management office, and executive vice president, consumer. Before re-joining TM in 2005, Imri was with a pay-TV operator in Malaysia and also had a stint as a consultant with a global management consulting firm.

Idham Nawawi (pictured right), chief executive officer of Celcom Axiata said this new appointment is "timely" as the telco is setting a clear focus towards operational excellence and driving growth through innovation, digitisation, and new business areas.

“Aligned with our goals as a key digitalisation enabler, the new appointment also marks our ongoing fortitude to become a high-performing company. Celcom remains committed to progress and spearhead digital frontiers to create a ‘win-win-win’ situation, leading towards building a more sustainable industry that will benefit the rakyat, the government and the nation’s digital ecosystem,” Idham added.

Separately last year, Celcom named Ginny Phuah its new head of brand and marketing, replacing Grace Chan. Additionally, the telco also saw Jack Wong move on from his role as head of digital and consumer brands, more than three years after joining the company.
