MCMC lifts temporary suspension of Mad Labs

The temporary suspension of the domain site madlabs.com.my was lifted earlier in December when the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was informed that the site is currently under maintenance to resolve the problem of users being redirected to some undesirable sites. This suspension was taken to protect consumers who surfed the site, following reports that it directed visitors to sites which contravene the laws of the country. According to a new statement on MCMC, it said, “This is a separate matter to the commercial issue between Nestle and Mad Labs, which doesn’t fall under the purview of MCMC.” It was previously reported that MCMC had shut down Mad Labs, a technology-based R&D company in Malaysia, following a report from Nestlé Malaysia regarding the QR codes that appear on certain Nestle products. Managing director and owner of Mad Labs, Ron Chow, confirmed the move to A+M, adding that MCMC has instructed MYNIC to bring down the website. Chow had then said that the company was in the midst of contacting the relevant authorities involved to understand fully the reasons behind their action and how the company could get the site back online as it is affecting the operations. The issue was first raised to MCMC when it received a report from Nestlé Malaysia regarding the QR codes that appear on certain Nestlé products that linked consumers to offensive and sexual content, including online gambling sites.
