FedEx announces commitment to carbon-neutrality by 2040

The FedEx corporation has announced a firm commitment to fully carbon-neutral operations by 2040. To get there, the company is making an initial investment of US$2 billion across three areas: vehicle electrification, sustainable energy, and carbon sequestration.

FedEx has made an additional US$100 million donation to Yale University for the formation of a Yale Centre for Natural Carbon Capture, which will research ways to keep additional carbon dioxide from entering our atmosphere. In the meantime, the centre will also look into carbon offsets, especially for airline emissions, that will help achieve neutrality.

A few ways FedEx hopes to achieve carbon-neutral operations include:

  • Turning its entire pickup and delivery fleet into zero-emission electric vehicles by 2040
  • Sustainable packaging and carbon-neutral shopping offerings
  • Investment in alternative fuels to reduce emissions from airplanes and vehicles
  • Continuing FedEx Fuel Sense and Aircraft Modernization programs to reduce fuel consumption in aircraft
  • Investment in efficient facilities powered with renewable energy
  • Supporting continued research into natural carbon sequestration solutions

"We have a responsibility to take bold action in addressing climate challenges. This goal builds on our longstanding commitment to sustainability throughout our operations, while at the same time investing in long-term, transformational solutions for FedEx and our entire industry," said Frederick W. Smith, chairman and CEO, FedEx Corp.
