Streaming platform Netflix has partnered with creative agency The Clan to launch a short film set in Kuala Lumpur’s historical Pudu Prison. The film references a scene in Netflix’s action blockbuster Extraction 2 to give Malaysian viewers the thrill of a localised extraction mission.
The action-packed short film, titled PuduExtraction, features Chris Hemsworth, director Sam Hargave, Aaron Aziz, Iedil Dzuhrie and Fify Azmi as they rescue their team member Dzuhrie who has been kidnapped and held at Pudu Prison.

Yow Kuan Wai, executive creative director of The Clan, expressed excitement at having the opportunity to work with Hemsworth on the project and emphasised that the short film was not intended to be compared to the Hollywood-produced Extraction 2.
“Instead, we designed this campaign from the ground up to be hyper-local. From the crowd-pleasing cast, to the historic setting, to the cultural elements, right down to the gags only Malaysians would get,” continued Yow.
PuduExtraction, begins with Aziz on a video call with Hemsworth and Hargave as they provide Aziz with tips on how to do a proper extraction such as working with trusted people, staying low and only engaging as a last resort.
After the mission is over, the Malaysian team gifts Hemsworth with a traditional dagger to thank him for sending them a rescue helicopter during their mission.
The film also aims to respond to the increased demand for homegrown action films as seen from the success of Mat Kilau and Paskal at the Malaysia box office and the stiff competition action from the wide selection of movies available for viewers in the country, according to a statement by the company.
As Pudu Prison has a 100-year history of being an impenetrable prison, it was chosen as a setting to reference Extraction 2’s scenes where its heroes break out from a dangerous prison.
“To us, the making of this short film was a little like the oner sequence in Extraction 2: action-packed, full of surprises, and meticulously choreographed between client and agency,” said Casey Loh, co-founder and creative chief of The Clan.
As streaming platforms respond Malaysia's desire for local content, global video streaming service Amazon Prime Video (Prime Video) has increased its investment in local Malaysia content slate to elevate the localised user experience for customers in Malaysia.
The new local content slate introduced by the brand includes two Amazon Originals, That Cover Girl and Budak Flat, which will be launching later this year.
