The government is considering the proposal to develop a social media application specifically for Malaysians, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil reportedly said.
This is especially since some social media application providers are profiting off Malaysians but fail to ensure user safety, reported Malay Mail.
Fahmi reportedly said that Facebook earned US$600 million (RM2.66 billion) from Malaysia and questioned what the platform has done to ensure that the condition and use of their platform in Malaysia are safe. He reportedly said that the company lacks commitment too.

The minister reportedly added that it is not easy to develop Malaysia's own social media platform, but notes that some countries have attempted it.
Fahmi also reportedly said that he has met with celebrity host Aznil Nawawi, who came up with the proposal to develop Malaysia's own social media app following Meta's recent action of removing social media postings related to Palestine.
During said meeting, Fahmi reportedly reminded Aznil that children under 13 should not use social media.
Meanwhile, Fahmi reportedly said that he will meet with Meta to discuss its removal of Palestine-related content from the Prime Minister's social media accounts.
Last week, it was reported that Meta will be investigating the removal of prime minister Anwar Ibrahim's posts regarding the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail.
According to communications minister Fahmi Fadzil, a Meta representative sent him a text message at 3.30pm on Thursday (1 August) to inform him of the matter, reported The Star.
Fahmi reportedly said that Meta was confused about why it happened and provided no further explanation.
He added that the government will give them time to investigate without a deadline and will continue communications with Meta. A press statement will also be issued if there are any developments, Fahmi reportedly said.
