MTR Corporation has partnered with British artist Sam Cox, also known as Mr Doodle, to transform Hong Kong Station into a giant spaceship installation filled with his iconic doodles, as part of the “Mr Doodle in Space” exhibition.

The “Mr Doodle in Space” exhibition, done in collaboration with Pearl Lam Galleries, kicked off with a live art performance at the station by Mr Doodle on 19 November, incorporating MTR elements into his creation and captivating MTR passengers and art enthusiasts alike.

The complete spaceship artwork is now on display at Hong Kong Station until 3 December 2023. In addition to the doodling pattern on the wall and columns, the artist showcased his extraordinary creativity with an impromptu doodling performance on a giant spaceship installation measuring two metres in width and 1.5 metres in height.

With his special drawing tools, Doodle covered the surface of the spaceship with his iconic black and white scribbles, featuring clusters of characters and objects and even the distinctive pattern of MTR trains in his creation.

This performance not only stands as the largest live art event at MTR station, but also Doodle's first live performance at a railway since his debut at a pop-up store at the Old Street Station of London years ago.  The Hong Kong Station provides a space for Doodle to interact with passengers, making the Hong Kong city vibes on MTR a part of his creative inspiration.

After the exhibition at Hong Kong Station, the spaceship artwork created by Doodle will be donated to local non-profit organisation Make-A-Wish Hong Kong to support child-oriented charity work, making the exhibition even more meaningful.

Furthermore, the MTR Corporation hopes to share the joy of the festive season with the public and continue spreading love and care within the community. During the exhibition period, the public is invited to write their wishes on heartfelt cards featuring Mr Doodle's spaceship designs. These wishes will be sent through the "Wish Mailbox" to the children benefiting from Make-A-Wish Hong Kong, transforming their wishes into love and blessings.

“I am excited to collaborate with MTR Corporation to extend my solo space-themed exhibition in Hong Kong to the bustling Hong Kong Station. It is my first live performance in a Hong Kong public transport network, which allows more Hong Kong people to better understand my artistic vision,” said Doodle.

“It has also been an eye-opening and unforgettable experience to interact with the public. The spaceship specially created for MTR is my gift to Hong Kong. I hope it inspires everyone to stay curious and hopeful amidst the humdrum reality of everyday life, to explore the infinite possibilities of the world and to chase their dreams,” Doodle added.

“The unique artistry of Doodle has captivated minds worldwide. The collaboration with Doodle has enabled MTR to introduce yet another unique artistic style to the public and our passengers, infusing everyday life with art. We hope that through their interaction with art, passengers will discover even greater joy and inspiration during their journeys,” said Linda Choy, corporate affairs and branding director of MTR Corporation.

She added: “The playful doodled spaceship and the space-themed exhibition created by Doodle infuse Hong Kong Station with a vibrant artistic ambience, bringing delightful surprises to the MTR journeys of local residents and tourists alike. We hope passengers can take a moment from their busy life at the MTR art space to experience the transformative power of art, capture memorable photos and be filled with happiness.”
