MONOPOLY unveils new look and features for 90th anniversary

Manufacturing and entertainment company Hasbro has unveiled a fresh new look for its popular board game MONOPOLY to celebrate its 90th anniversary.

The revamped board game features a more compact box for storage, designed to be easy for players to use on game night. Players can also enjoy updated money designs and a return to the classic look fans know with the chance and community chest cards, along with title deeds.

The new look also includes new graphics, larger tokens, houses, and hotels to complement the board game's new modern look.

In addition to the revamped look, the company released three new expansion packs for players to use, with an aim to breathe new life into the classic family board game.

"These expansions not only provide quick-turn gameplay, but also add twists by giving players a chance to win money, collect new cards to get away with mischief, and unlock opportunities to buy every space on the board," Hasbro said in a statement.

The first pack, titled "MONOPOLY free parking jackpot expansion", allows player to attach the expansion to the classic MONOPOLY board and turn the ‘free parking’ space into a jackpot. Players can then upgrade to the deal mobile token and draw bonus cards to take free properties.

The "MONOPOLY go to jail expansion" also allows players to attach the pack to the board to turn the ‘jail’ and ‘go to jail’ spaces into desired locations. While there, players can collect corruption or super corruption cards that let them get away with mischief and score advantages over other players.

"MONOPOLY buy everything expansion" allows players to buy every space. They can also roll the buy die to purchase more ways to win and abilities from the rotating sale vault. When all properties are owned, the richest player wins, or a player can win instantly by completing an instant-win sale card.

“These all-new expansion packs and the completely redesigned classic board game are a result of deep consumer insights, and I think they truly elevate the MONOPOLY play experience. For example, the MONOPOLY Free Parking Jackpot Expansion was inspired by decades of consumers developing their personal ‘house rules,’ and we wanted to recognise how our consumers have been playing," said Brian Baker, senior vice president of board games at Hasbro.

He added, "In our 90th year, we’re celebrating the elements our players have loved for nearly a century to keep the exciting gameplay of MONOPOLY alive for decades to come".

The expansion packs are now available at major retailers, with the revamped MONOPOLY board game available for pre-order on Amazon.

This isn't the first time MONOPOLY has had a quirky look. Back in 2022, MondelÄ“z Malaysia's Chipsmore partnered with MONOPOLY for its virtual board game contest with a twist. The Chipsmore Metapoly, a reimagined Monopoly game filled with a new concept of properties in fascinating yet over-the-top cookie-inspired spaces, featured what the brand touted to be first-of-its-kind NFTs to be given away as prizes.

There were 28 exclusive NFT virtual properties in total, including three units of 3D properties for winners. The NFTs, such as the Cookie Quarters, Crumble Castle, Cookie Galaxy, and more could be kept in possession as private collections. Leo Burnett Malaysia was responsible for the conceptualisation, design and development of the NFT properties.
