A slew of memoranda of understandings (MoUs) were signed between Malaysian tech players, and global tech leaders on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona.

According to a Bernama report, 19 MoUs were signed, including a collaboration between CelcomDigi and Ericsson, aimed at driving 5G technology transformations for the oil and gas industry. CelcomDigi also partnered with global technology solutions provider ZTE Corporation to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into Malaysia’s telco infrastructure. Together, ZTE and CelcomDigi will use AI-driven solutions to drive connectivity, empower businesses, and support government digital initiatives.

The Malaysian telco also signed another MoU with Aduna, a landmark venture which is dedicated to enabling developers worldwide to accelerate innovation by leveraging mobile networks to their full potential via common network application programming interfaces (APIs). Celcomdigi said the partnership will spur the adoption of common network APIs.

CelcomDigi had also signed another MoU with Chinese tech firm Huawei. Earlier, it was also reported that Huawei unveiled its first AI core network, an autonomous generative mobile network capable of self-optimisation. According to Gadget, Huawei said it would enable the whole industry to evolve from connecting everything intelligently to seamlessly interlinking AI-driven agents, terminals, and scenarios.

Separately, an MoU was also signed between the Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), Malaysia’s single wholesale 5G network operator, and Ericsson to speed up the adoption of 5G technologies in a bid to enhance Malaysia’s digital transformation initiatives.

Meanwhile, Maxis and Huawei will team up to accelerate digital intelligent transformation, while YTL Communications and Equinix will collaborate to work on global AI cloud enablement and sustainable AI infrastructure.

This comes amid the Digital Ministry's pledge to lead the country towards its goal to become a leader in the Southeast Asian digital economy. Its minister Gobind Singh Deo reportedly said the measures in place include expanding broadband coverage, enhancing digital skills and promoting innovation in the technology area.

Gobind had stated that he is confident Malaysia can achieve their goal with the collaboration of stakeholders, while ensuring that no one is left behind. He stated that Malaysia will become a larger competitor in the growing digital economy by equipping the public with the necessary knowledge and skills.

The minister also reportedly said that Malaysia will become a larger competitor in the growing digital economy by equipping the public with the necessary knowledge and skills, adding that digital development, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and animation, is required to progress along with Malaysia's overall growth.

Just last week, Malaysia’s national artificial intelligence office (NAIO) convened for the first meeting of its working groups, involving over 170 experts from diverse backgrounds. There are seven working groups covering AI sovereignty, regulation and policy, security, governance and ethics, safety, talent, and advisory.

According to the digital ministry, each working group is designed to address specific challenges and opportunities within the national AI agenda, ensuring Malaysia remains competitive in the AI-driven era.  In a Bernama report, deputy digital minister Wilson Ugak Anak Kumbong said in parliament that the initiative aims to identify gaps in existing frameworks, including emerging problems such as the use of AI for criminal activities.
