Malaysia Airports and Maxis tie-up to develop digital transformation plan for smart airports

Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB) has partnered with Maxis to co-develop a digital transformation roadmap for smart airport operations. According to multiple media outlets including The Star and Bernama, the partnership includes the WiFi and 5G-related network as well as 5G-enabled solutions for tenants and passengers at both terminals of Kuala Lumpur's International Airport (KLIA). Both parties will also co-create 5G use cases and solutions for smart travel and tourism, as well as for smart retail and smart security, Bernama said.

MAHB said that with the telco's established and leading-edge network connectivity, the WiFi coverage across both terminals at KLIA would be enhanced to deliver a better airport experience. MAHB also added that the smart WiFi infrastructure is a holistic solution with in-built capabilities such as data analytics, where airport retailers would be to tap into this resource to better understand consumer behaviour, Bernama said. Maxis will also provide MAHB with insights to capitalise on omnichannel marketing, ensuring a seamless sales experience, Bernama said. A+M has reached out to Maxis and MAHB for comment.

MAHB group CEO Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said that ultimately, this partnership aims to transform the airports into smart Airports. Meanwhile, MAHB has also taken steps towards digitalising its operations. In 2018, it unveiled mobile app, MYairports, to help users plan their journey to the airport ahead of time and provide a seamless journey through the airport right until the boarding gate. MAHB previously said it intended to set aside RM30 million for the initiative, priortising real-time digital interaction with passengers.
