On 31 May 2024, Live Nation Entertainment launched an investigation into the data breach that affected its Ticketmaster counterpart. The breach was discovered on 20 May, the latest in a series of high-profile corporate hacks.

In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Live Nation stated that they have identified “unauthorised activity” within a third-party cloud database and are working with forensic investigators to pinpoint the cause.

The company also stated in the filing that on 27 May 2024, a criminal threat actor offered what it alleged to be company user data for sale via the dark web.

A hacking group called the ShinyHunters has claimed to possess the stolen personal data of 560 million Ticketmaster users. According to Hackread, the 1.3 terabytes of data are now being offered for a one-time sale of $500,000.

However, Live Nation Entertainment did not name the hacking group in their filing.

Additionally, Live Nation allegedly does not believe that this incident will impact their business, finances or results of operations.

“We are working to mitigate risk to our users and the company, and have notified and are cooperating with law enforcement,” it said in a statement.

The company added as when appropriate, they are also notifying regulatory authorities and users with respect to unauthorised access to personal information.

This news comes after the US Department of Justice, joined by 29 states and the District of Columbia, sued concert promoter Live Nation Entertainment and its wholly-owned subsidiary Ticketmaster for allegedly engaging in anticompetitive practices.

They have alleged that Live Nation locks out competition in ticketing through the use of long-term, exclusive ticketing contracts with venues that can last over a decade while also acquiring venues themselves.
