Malaysia-based Malindo Air has rebranded as Batik Air in line with the Lion Group's goal to establish a common identity for the full-service airlines within the group. The exercise will be conducted in phases and Batik Air will communicate to its passengers and partners progressively during the rollout.
With the approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia in place, Batik Air is now able to conduct business for seamless transfers, leveraging KLIA as a transit hub for the Lion Group of Airlines. CEO captain Mushafiz Bin Mustafa Bakri said with the rebranding exercise and the reopening of the borders taking place in the region, the airline is very excited for the opportunities presented for the potential growth of the airline. "With the new brand, we will be able to offer fresh and new services," he said.
With the reopening of borders and the gradual improvement in the demand for travel, Batik Air will be adding a number of B737 aircraft to its existing fleet to offer services to the markets operated prior to the outbreak of the pandemic. A+M has reached out to Malindo Air for comment on the rebranding.
Malaysia reopened its borders on 1 April and since then, Malindo Air has been opening up ticket sales for international travel to countries including Australia and India. It now operates flights to Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Trichy, Mumbai, and New Delhi.
The tourism industry struggled during COVID-19 and like many airlines, Malindo Air also reportedly asked staff to take a pay cut in 2020. Among the list of measures Malindo Air put in place to manage the revenue shortfall included getting employees to volunteer for unpaid leave, suspending flights, as well as appealing to suppliers to defer payments, Reuters previously reported.
