HSBC has appointed Brad Jones (pictured) as the new head of PayMe, effective 29 May 2023. He will succeed Dharini Kennan Hemant, who will take up another global role within HSBC.

In his new role, Jones will be responsible for driving the next chapter of PayMe’s growth story and devising the development roadmap of PayMe, which plays a pivotal role in the digitisation strategy and financial inclusion agenda of HSBC’s wealth and personal banking business in Hong Kong.

Prior joining PayMe, Jones helmed the role of chief executive officer at Wave Money, a mobile financial services provider in Myanmar. He specialised in electronic fund transfer, having spearheaded mobile money and innovation for Visa in Asia Pacific, North Africa and the Middle East. According to the release, Jones advised the World Bank Group in different markets including the Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh and China.

Dharini Kennan Hemant joined HSBC in 2013 as senior manager of group strategy, based in London. She was then relocated to Hong Kong as HSBC's APAC head of strategy and planning for wealth and personal banking. In 2021, she was promoted to CEO of PayMe, according to her LinkedIn.

Commenting on the appointment, Maggie Ng, head of wealth and personal banking, Hong Kong, HSBC, said: “With Jones’ extensive experience in the emerging payment and fintech industry, I am confident that he will continue to build an unrivalled digital payment franchise for PayMe and uncover new growth opportunities and partnerships for our homegrown e-wallet.”

Meanwhile, Jones said: “It’s a significant career milestone for me to take the helm of one of the fastest growing payment gateways in Hong Kong. With PayMe being a key player in electronic payments in Hong Kong, I’m excited to work with a dedicated team of professionals to extend the success story of PayMe and support its ongoing contribution to the development of a cashless and financially-inclusive society in Hong Kong.”

Don't miss: PayMe lowers user age threshold to 12 years old

Back in March, PayMe has lowered the age threshold for users to 12 years old, allowing parents to understand their children's digital spending while also supporting nearly 600,000 local teenagers as they take their first step in financial education and management.

The lowering of the user age threshold from 16 to 12 aims to allow parents to make good use of PayMe's various functions, send pocket money to their children anytime and anywhere, and understand their children’s spending through transaction and transfer history. Teenagers can also enjoy the electronic payment convenience of PayMe and use their own account to top up and transfer money out of their PayMe accounts, helping them establish responsible financial habits.
