Hong Kong Tramways has introduced a new electronic payment system (pictured left) on over 100 trams for public’s convenience in fare payment, supporting 12 electronic payment methods such as credit cards, mobile payment devices and QR codes.

In addition to Octopus card and cash, passengers can now use another 12 electronic payment methods such as Alipay, BOC Pay, Union Pay, Apply Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Huawei Pay, making a total of 14 fare payment options available. When the system makes a beeping sound and shows "Welcome Aboard”, the transaction is considered successful. According to The Standard, Hong Kong Tramways owns over 160 trams, in which the installation of all new machine will be completed within three weeks.

While WeChat Pay is not included in the new payment system, operations manager of Hong Kong Tramways Benjamin Lee said that it would be available in the next phase, without unveiling an exact date, according to the report. He added that the new fare machine aimed to facilitate tourists, as short-haul tourists were less likely to buy an Octopus card while some tourists may not have enough cash.

On the other hand, fares on Hong Kong’s trams will not increase this year, but the service’s operator said a decision on a raise next year depended on the recovery of the local tourism industry, according to South China Morning Post

Hong Kong Tramways’ managing director Paul Tirvaudey told SCMP that last July’s adult fare increase of 15.4%, up from HK$2.60 to HK$3 for a ride, had helped recovery amid loss of revenue due to the pandemic. “It had a positive effect, because it brought more revenue, and helped us to recover,” Tirvaudey added.
