FamilyMart Thailand acquired by Central Food Retail to accelerate expansion

Central Retail Public Company’s subsidiary Central Food Retail has acquired all shares of Central FamilyMart Thailand. The Thailand franchise is equivalent to 49% of Japan's FamilyMart unit. The acquisition will provide Central Retail authority to manage the FamilyMart franchise completely and leverage on its innovation to meet the needs of consumers in order to expand its business opportunities, in line with the company’s strategy.

SFM Holding, a subsidiary under Central Retail, owns 50.65% of the Central FamilyMart business, while its department store arm Robinson Public has a 0.35% stake in the convenience store chain. According to a Bangkok Post article, Central Retail's CEO Yol Phokasub said through the acquisition, the company aims to strengthen its foothold in the food market and convenience store business in Thailand. He also added that FamilyMart Thailand has 1,000 stores in the country, and will be expanding its presence.

In April this year, FamilyMart introduced a food and drinks container mart and automatic vending machines, as part of its efforts to adapt to the COVID-19 situation. In addition, the convenience store chain also aims to expand its channels and improve accessibility and consumer reach. The Family Mart Corner concept are the first container-style convenience stores in Thailand which offers fast services to consumers. This model steps away from space limitations and the time required for physical construction.

Another new channel that FamilyMart introduced is automatic vending machines under the concept of “Hungry? Get it now”. The machines offer food and beverages for consumers on the go, in line with the current situation during which people are in a rush and want to maintain a safe distance. The products offered in the vending machines are based on customer data in each area so that their needs are catered to effectively.

FamilyMart has also in recent times supported the convenience of customers. The convenience store chain partnered with Grab Thailand to allow consumers to purchase items and have them delivered using GrabMart application.
