Elon Musk: X hit by cyberattacks again

Elon Musk has said on X (formerly Twitter), that the social media platform was hit by a major cyberattack and is still facing such threats. Screenshots of the tweet reportedly read: “We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and (or) a country is involved.”
According to several foreign media outlets, including Reuters, NY Post, and the BBC, Musk also added that he was working to trace the source of the alleged cyberattacks. However, checks by MARKETING-INTERACTIVE have found that the original post may have been taken down from Musk’s X page.

Earlier on Monday, reports of X’s outage began at 6pm, and spiked around 10PM and 12Am (SGT). According to Downdetector.com, 58% of the reports complained of issues with the app, while another 31% reported of problems with the website. This included users across Asia, Europe and North America. From the US alone, around tens of thousands of reports were lodged citing technical issues affecting the platform.
Musk did not clarify what he meant by “a lot of resources”, and did not provide any evidence for his allegations of the cyberattacks. However, in an interview with Fox Business, the Tesla owner alleged that computers used in the attack appeared to have digital addresses in the Ukraine area, and added that X was still trying to figure out exactly what happened.
However, several cybersecurity experts have told the foreign media outlets that it was difficult to assess the said attack without being able to see inside X’s operations. The tech billionaire is a frequent critic of Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky, with several of his X posts in the past week targeted at the Zelensky.
Earlier last year, Elon Musk had claimed that X was being targeted by massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, which were not verified. The attack is said to be an attempt to overload a website, making it hard to access.
Musk had bought over Twitter in 2022 for US$44 billion, before renaming it to X. The billionaire had been in the spotlight recently over his appointment as US President Donald Trump’s co-lead for the newly created department of government efficiency.
