Astro breaks family traditions in comedic Raya ad

Media and entertainment company Astro has partnered up with Talon Creative for yet another Raya ad. Titled “Lain macamnya Raya” ('An extraordinary Raya'), the eight-minute film, directed by Hyrul Anuar of Directors Think Thank, delves into the true meaning of family happiness.

The ad follows Jumaah, a single mother, as she leads her family through preparations for Syawal (the first day of Eid). The video starts off on a comedic note, with Jumaah facing off with a shopkeeper as she picks up her family’s baju Raya (Raya outfit) orders. Later, viewers are introduced to her three sons— Malik, Budi and Nadim.

Every Raya, Jumaah has a list of non-negotiable dishes which must be homemade by her family, such as grandpa’s rendang ('stew'), dodol ('toffee sweets'), and lemang ('rice bamboo'). Besides that, it is also mandatory for the whole family to be decked out in pink-coloured Raya outfits for an annual group photo.

However, this Raya will be “lain macam” ('rather unusual'), as her three sons have brought their new wives home for the celebrations. As soon as they arrived at their mother’s doorstep, the three couples were met with Jumaah’s negativity and reluctance to bend her ways.

In the midst of an argument with her sons, Jumaah explained that the traditions she has been keeping, are her ways of remembering her late husband. Later, Jumaah comes home to a spread of dishes on the table prepared by her three daughters-in-law and decides to accept the new “traditions”.

The short film features local stars Ellie Suriaty, Mierul Aiman, Qasrina Karim and many more. In a statement sighted by A+M, Azlin Reza Azmi, vice president of Malay, international, kids and on demand, Astro, said “Along with this year’s Raya theme, Astro will bring content to viewers which are both entertaining and uniting. This Raya will be made special with stories which are close to our hearts, catering to the tastes of every generation.”

She added that the broadcaster's offerings for the festive season aims to ensure that every moment spent with family and loved ones at home, is more meaningful and livelier. “This is also reflected through our ‘Lain macamnya Raya’ ad, which shows that sweetness can be borne out of differences, if we are open to receiving it.”

Central to the “Lain macamnya Raya” ad was Astro’s 2025 Aidilfitri theme, “Meriah lain macam” ('An extraordinary celebration'). The broadcaster has also released two festive songs titled “Meriah lain macam” and “Nyam nyam ketupat” ('yummy rice cake'). Besides its wide variety of festive broadcast offerings, Astro will also be running live events across Kuala Lumpur throughout March.

Last Raya, Astro collaborated with Talon Creative and Layar Lucida for its “Ada apa dengan masa” ('What do we have with time') ad, which was packed to the brim with 30 Malaysian stars. While entertaining, the film also hits home with a message to spend quality time with family before it’s too late.

Previously, Astro and Talon Creative also collaborated to launch an AI-driven initiative, Project; Exit, aimed at empowering and providing support for those in need via positive social media engagement.
