Bookworms will have one less place to get their books come 26 April 2023 when Amazon shuts down popular online bookstore Book Depository.  In an announcement by Book Depository, it informed customers that they would still be able to place order until 21pm BST on 26 April, and that they will continue to deliver purchases and provide support for orders till 23 June this year.

"From all of us at Book Depository we want to say 'thank you'. Delivering your favorite reads to you since 2007 has been a pleasure," it said in its announcement.

The news comes after trade magazine the Bookseller reported that an email was sent out to vendors and publishing partners that Book Depository will be closing. The email reportedly said that it will be winding down its business in the coming weeks including "discontinuing our listings as a marketplace seller" and closing the website.

The email, which was reportedly from Andy Chart, head of vendor management at Book Depository, thanked vendors and partners for its "supportive partnership" over the years to make printed books "more accessible" to readers around the world.

In tandem, Amazon saw massive job cuts amidst many tech layoffs. The multinational company had decided to eliminate over 18,000 roles as part of its recent workforce reduction in January this year. The company also recently laid off over 100 employees in its video games sector and saw about 9,000 more layoffs in March this year.

According to a public staff note posted in January, Amazon’s chief executive Andy Jessy said the company is planning to cut over 18,000 jobs between the reductions it made in November last year and the ones it is sharing. The layoff decisions will mainly affect its eCommerce and human resources teams.

“Several teams are impacted; however, the majority of role eliminations are in our Amazon stores and People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT) organisations,” he said.  Amazon also recently laid off over 100 employees in its video games sector and saw about 9,000 more layoffs in March this year.
