The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has warned online users of a fake Facebook account impersonating it. The fake account by the name of 'Putrajaya AGC' had spread false and misleading information on social media.

In a statement on its official Facebook page, AGC clarified that neither the AGC nor its prosecution division offered the services claimed by the fake account.

It added that users are advised to not spread such information, always be cautious and to not be easily deceived by offers made by the fake accounts in question.

The AGC also shared screenshots of the fake account, which features the national coat of arms as its profile picture and promotions of fake services.

The AGC then encouraged users to follow the AGC's official Facebook page for accurate updates and information.

Recently, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) removed 32,676 fraud and scam content this year so far. Deputy communications minister Teo Nie Ching said Malaysia had lost more than RM3.18 billion from 2021 to April 2024 as a result of fraud.

In addition, the minister said that AI is transforming the media landscape, however, it poses risks such as misinformation, deepfake and online scams.

These scams, according to Teo in a statement on Facebook, also affect prominent figures in Malaysia. These prominent figures include singer Siti Nurhaliza, influencer Khairul Aming and other leaders. As such, to address these concerns, the MCMC has removed more than 32,676 fraudulent pieces of content and will be establishing a regulatory framework to license social media services, said Teo.
