1,500 restaurants in HK to offer discounts on certain food items on 1 July

To celebrate the 26th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to Chinese rule, close to 1,500 restaurants, bars and fast food chains in the city will offer special discount for specified food items on 1 July.

Tommy Cheung, catering sector lawmaker, as well as chairman of the Hong Kong Catering Industry Association, said that participating restaurants include major fast food chains such as McDonald's, Café de Coral, Fairwood, KFC, Maxim's, as well as a number of bars and restaurants. They will sell their set meals at 71% of their original price, drawing from the phrasing of discounts in Chinese – which referring to 1 July.

A check by MARKETING-INTERACTIVE saw on the participants list that while McDonald's will charge HK$11 for two pineapple pies on the day, Maxim's MX will offer 29% discount for a Hainanese chicken rice set.

According to RTHK, Cheung said that similar discounts might be introduced on 16 July, the disbursement date of the second phase of the consumption vouchers scheme, which depended on the reaction and willingness of the industry.He added that restaurants were unable to offer an across-the-board discount due to profit concerns and manpower shortage.

Recently, Hong Kong has introduced a series of special offers and free activities on 1 July for the public to celebrate the handover, including free tram rides and museum exhibitions. On 1 July, the public will be able to enjoy free tram and Star Ferry rides, which will be serving stops around the harbour and run between Central and Tai O on Lantau Island.

Moreover, fares for designated ferry routes, including between Central and Hung Hom, as well as North Point and Kwun Tong, will also be free of charge. Furthermore, HongKongers can visit Hong Kong Wetland Park for free on 1 July. The permanent exhibitions of Science Museum, Space Museum, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art, M+ Museum and Palace Museum will also offer free admission to the public on the day.
