Customisable mobile service Yoodo will be discontinued after 29 August 2024. The discontinuation of the Yoodo brand is due to the undertakings committed to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) following the merger of Celcom and Digi.

Starting 19 June, Yoodo will be disabling certain functions from the Yoodo app. These functions include new SIM order, new SIM activation, account registration, invite friends and customised validity extension.

Leading up to the discontinuation, customers can still continue using their existing service without any interruption, said Yoodo in a statement seen by A+M.

Following which, users have the option to port out to another mobile operator or terminate their Yoodo service. Users who don't wish to port out to another telco can continue with their existing subscription plan under a CelcomDigi Prepaid 5G plan.

"No changes will occur, and you will continue to enjoy existing services on the CelcomDigi network, including product and support channels from CelcomDigi without any interruptions. All product offers and payment channels will remain the same," said Yoodoo in a statement.

"There will be no charges if you continue your plan with CelcomDigi," added Yoodo.

In tandem, users who opted for porting-out and terminate options for their Yoodo lines will be eligible for a refund. The refund amount will be based on the final Yoodo credits balance upon submission of the refund form. No refunds will be made for Yoodo points.

The merger of Celcom and Digi was first announced in November 2022. Of which Yoodo, the digital telco under Celcom, was given 18 months to be divested upon completion of the merger. Upon expiry of the divestiture period, the brand has to be shut down, said the MCMC in a statement in November 2022.

Within three years, Celcom and Digi must also remove exclusive arrangements with its distributors in Sabah, Labuan, Sarawak, Terengganu, Pahang and Kelantan.

At the same duration, the merged company is not allowed to enter any new exclusivity arrangement with exclusive distributors or other distributors in the region unless approved by the MCMC.

The news comes just six months after Yoodo appointed the Clan as its new lead creative, social, and digital media agency, according to a statement by the agency at the time.

The appointment followed a pitch held in October 2023 and will be for 12 months with an option to renew for another year.

The Clan, at that point, said that it will be charged with the responsibility of creative ideation, strategy, creative output, social media strategy, and content development for the company with work starting this month.
