Yahoo has signed a deal to sell its technology news website TechCrunch to investment firm Regent.

TechCrunch is a well-known online platform, focusing on breaking news and analysis that matters to tech companies, startups and entrepreneurs. It was founded in 2005 by Michael Arrington and Keith Teare of venture firm Archimedes Ventures and later went through several ownership changes.

It was acquired by AOL in 2010 and was later owned by Verizon Media from 2015 to 2021 following Verizon's acquisition of AOL and Yahoo!. In 2021, Verizon sold AOL, Yahoo! and TechCrunch to private equity firm Apollo Global Management. Apollo later integrated the assets into a new entity called Yahoo! Inc.

According to media reports, Regent has been actively expanding its tech news site portfolio. It recently acquired Foundry, the parent company of publications PCWorld, Macworld, Infoworld, CIO and TechAdvisor.

In a statement, Yahoo reportedly said that the next chapter under Regent can help maintain TechCrunch's influence and support its continued growth.

It added that it will continue to collaborate with Regent and TechCrunch where the long-term partnership will be focused on expanding audience reach, fostering innovative content development and creating mutual financial growth.

The financial terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.

MARKETING-INTERACTIVE has reached out to Yahoo for more information.

This comes after TechCrunch went through a round of layoffs earlier in January this year. The media company confirmed that 10 employees were affected as part of its workforce reduction, reported Business Insider. The staff were reportedly laid off amid "evolving needs".

Meanwhile, Yahoo went through its own round of layoffs in recent years too. In April last year, it reportedly axed its editorial and social media staff in Singapore

In a statement to MARKETING-INTERACTIVE at the time, a Yahoo spokesperson said the company is shifting its editorial strategy to better align with strategic priorities for Yahoo Singapore.

Within the same month, the company acquired Artifact, an AI-driven news aggregation and discovery platform. The acquisition is said to advances Yahoo's commitment to bringing trusted news and information to hundreds of millions of users globally. It also accelerates Yahoo's vision to offer a more personalised experience for discovering news and information across platforms.
