Yahoo is reported to be axing its editorial and social media staff members in Singapore. While the platform has been increasingly curating third-party content, it still has original reporting.

In a statement to MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, A Yahoo spokesperson said the company is shifting its editorial strategy to better align with strategic priorities for Yahoo Singapore.

“Readers can expect to continue seeing the content they most regularly engage with and enjoy. We remain focused on delivering a diverse selection of high-quality and engaging news, lifestyle and finance content, from local and international sources,” the spokesperson added.

According to The Straits Times, the decision to cut the teams came as Yahoo found that its partner content consistently drove higher engagement. Meanwhile, The Edge Singapore reported 17 staff are affected by the shift in Yahoo’s strategy and will receive slightly more than two weeks’ pay per year of service.

The cuts come shortly after Yahoo acquired Artifact, the AI-driven news aggregation and discovery platform created by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger.  Following this acquisition, Artifact will no longer operate as a standalone app. The proprietary AI-powered personalisation technology and other features will be integrated across Yahoo, including the Yahoo News app in the next few months.

During the acquisition, Yahoo said the move advances Yahoo's commitment to bringing trusted news and information to hundreds of millions of users globally, and accelerates Yahoo's vision to offer a more personalised experience for discovering news and information across platforms.
