Hong Kong women’s ice hockey team reassures there would be no further anthem blunders

The leader of Hong Kong women’s ice hockey team has reassured that there would be no further anthem blunders after an event staff reportedly downloaded a wrong national anthem online.

According to a report by SCMP, Annie Kwan Yuen Yee, leader of the Hong Kong women's ice hockey team, said that the USB drive containing the national anthem, which was submitted to the organiser, was not passed to the person in charge of playing the song. An event staff then downloaded a wrong national anthem online. Luckily, she said the organiser allowed the team to check the anthem before the match started to avoid another blunder.

Kwan added that the team understood the importance of the national anthem and will make sure the correct version is played at the award ceremony. She told the chief executive of Hong Kong John Lee and sports officials not to worry that, she would double-check whether the national anthem was correct before the ceremony.

Meanwhile, in the Ice Hockey Women's World Championship Division III - Group A event, the Hong Kong women's ice hockey team defeated Estonia 3-0 in the final match, securing 13 points with four wins out of five games.

Sports chief Kevin Yeung congratulated the Hong Kong women's ice hockey team on the win on Monday, and praised the team for putting on a remarkable performance. He wrote in a statement that the team outperformed its best results in the past and reached new heights with its excellent performance.

Anthem blunders that involved the wrong song being played at an international sporting event have occurred at least five times in recent months. Back in March, Sports Federation and Olympic Committee (SF&OC) honorary vice chairman Pui Kwan Kay urged the government to push Google in ensuring the correct Chinese national anthem appears as the top search result for certain keywords, following several anthem blunders at international sports events.

This comes after a song related to the 2019 protest in Hong Kong was played during an international ice hockey competition in Bosnia on Tuesday. According to the video of the match, the Hong Kong athletes had put up a "T" sign with their hands to lodge a protest immediately, then the organiser made correction at once. The organiser said the accident was not intentional and it has apologised to the Hong Kong team representatives. It also said preventive measures have been taken with the committee.
