UNIQLO and adidas top SEA charts as best fashion retailers, says YouGov

UNIQLO and adidas have topped the charts as the best fashion retailer in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. According to YouGov’s Retail Rankings 2021 in these three Southeast Asian countries, UNIQLO had a YouGov Index score of 47.7 in Singapore, while adidas scored 39.7 and 47.3 in Malaysia and Indonesia respectively. 

The rankings tracked data from 1 September 2020 to 31 August 2021 and are based on the Index score from YouGov BrandIndex, which constantly measures overall brand health. The score takes into account consumers’ perception of a brand’s overall quality, value, impression, reputation, satisfaction, and whether consumers would recommend the brand to others. 

Ervin Ha, head of commercial at YouGov APAC, said that the retail rankings this year revealed that many fashion and sportswear brands have remained resilient amidst extended lockdowns and mall closures. The rankings also show the power of such strong global brands.

“Unsurprisingly, we also see supermarkets and retail chains strengthening their position among consumers, as people are cooking more at home, becoming the healthiest retail brands of the past year in the region,” he added. Here's how other retail brands fared across the three markets.

Singapore

Joining UNIQLO as one of the top five fashion retailers in Singapore are adidas (28.8), Nike (27.6), Marks & Spencer (21.2), and Levi’s (19.0). Other brands that made it to the list are G2000, H&M, Zara, Tangs, and Isetan.

The retail rankings this year also saw FairPrice clinch the top spot for general retail brands in Singapore, with a score of 46.6. Coming in second was Sheng Siong (35.6), followed by IKEA (34.4), Cold Storage (28.9), and Don Don Donki (27.2). Joining them in the top 10 are Watsons, Giant Singapore, Guardian, Challenger, and Harvey Norman. 

Additionally, Sheng Siong saw the most improvement this year with a 4.7-point increase from last year. Giant Singapore and Don Don Donki also made the cut for the top three most improved retailers with a 2.8-point and 2.5-point increase respectively. Also making it into the top ten are 7-Eleven, Prime Supermarket, Cheers, MEIDI-YA, COURTS, Best Denki and Challenger.

Malaysia

In Malaysia, UNIQLO came in second with about a point difference from adidas (38.6), followed by Padini (30.4), H&M (28.7) and Levi's (27.6). Also making the top ten were PUMA, Parkson, Cotton On, JUSCO and Guess.

Adidas topped as Malaysia's most improved fashion retailer as well, with a 2.5-point increase from last year's report. PUMA came in a close second with a 2.3-point increase, followed by UNIQLO with a 2.0-point increase. Joining them in the top ten are Levi's H&M, Forever 21, Parkson, Pull & Bear, ZARA and Cotton On.

Indonesia

Meanwhile, Indonesia saw Nike (45.8) and Levi's (29.3) join Adidas as the top three fashion retailers, followed by Converse (25.1) and UNIQLO (23.4). Also making in the top 10 are H&M, Reebok, PUMA, Vans and ZARA.

UNIQLO topped as Indonesia's most improved fashion retailer with a 4.3-point increase from last year's report. H&M came in a close second with a 4.0-point increase, followed by Levi's with a 3.0-point increase. Joining them in the top ten are Converse, Crocodile, Nike, Guess, Under Armour, Adidas and ZARA. 

For general retailers, Indomart clinched the top spot with a score of 42.9. Coming in second is Alfamart (37.5), followed by Gramedia (27.4), TRANSmart Carrefour (23.5), and ACE Hardware (20.1). Joining them in the top 10 are Hypermart, IKEA, Matahari, Superindo and Alfamidi. 

Additionally, Indomaret saw the most improvement this year with a 6.2-point increase from last year. Alfamart and Alfamidi also made the cut for top three most improved retailers with a 6.1-point and 4.8-point increase respectively. Also making into the top ten are Superindo, MR. D.I.Y., Informa, IKEA, ACE Hardware, Lottemart and Circle K.
