Turkish Embassy Tourism and Information Office (Turkish Tourism) has appointed SLPR Worldwide Group to manage PR and social media duties across Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia under its initiaitve to promote safe tourism. Effective immediately, the agency's PR and digital arm will manage Turkish Tourism's media relations, social media content development and influencer strategy. This follows a pitch held in July this year.

Begum Sahin, tourism and culture counsellor of Turkish Tourism Malaysia said it is its priority to showcase Turkey as the role model of safe tourism, at the same time informing them that it is safe to consider Turkey as a travel destination when borders reopen.

She added that SLPR Worldwide understood these concerns as well, and its proposed approach is insightful and a good strategic fit to overcome the situation. She also believes that the agency will effectively communicate Turkish Tourism's current efforts to the intended audience.

"The pandemic has greatly affected the tourism industry, as travelling is still prohibited for many countries while those who are able to travel may have doubtful feelings about exploring overseas. We want to help the tourism industry and instill confidence in the Southeast Asia region that travelling to Turkey is safe and hygenic," Sahin said.

Leon Tang, senior partner and chief operating officer, Southeast Asia, said this is a great opportunity for the agency to demonstrate its expertise in various communication channels such as digital, PR and influencer strategy to educate the audience on safe tourism and the wonders of Turkey.

"This is a privilege for us to play our part in helping to rejuvenate the tourism industry for both Malaysia, Turkey and Southeast Asia counterparts by giving our target market something to look forward to or eager to explore once borders reopen," Leon said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Republic of Turkey recently initiated the Healthy Tourism Certification programme, ensuring tourists to Turkey are able to wander the country in a safe and hygienic manner while feeling at ease during their visit. Sahin said the government wants travellers to feel secure while still having Turkey as their preferred travel destination in mind when the opportunity to travel again arises.
