Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has unveiled a heartwarming and humorous Chinese New Year (CNY) campaign honouring family members who preserve cherished traditions during the celebrations.

The film, titled "The Family Anchor", highlights the often-unseen efforts of family members who work tirelessly to ensure the spirit of togetherness shines bright during Chinese New Year. The film centers around Mei, the oldest daughter of the family, who makes it her mission to keep a promise she made to her late parents.

This includes making sure that none of her siblings go on their secretly-planned Japan trip, getting new clothes, and purchasing abalone from the traditional chinese medicine store - just like how their father used to. She later sets up a reunion dinner with her family and relatives, feeling accomplished that she's successfully upkept the family tradition.

Set in the present day, the film cleverly balances humor with heartfelt moments, reminding audiences to honour those who make these celebrations meaningful year after year. Mei’s relentless efforts serve as a touching and lighthearted tribute to those who ensure family bonds remain strong across generations. Of course, the film also features Jero the cat, a character that has been a regular feature across all of TNB's festive films.

“At TNB, we believe that family is the source of light and warmth in every home,” said TNB’s head of group corporate communications, Samsul Ariffin bin Zainuddin.

“This film is a heartfelt reminder to cherish the people who keep our traditions alive and play a part in doing the same. Because at the heart of traditions that bring us together lies love that spans generations," he added.

According to Christyna Fong, creative director of Chariot Agency, “Family traditions are more than just rituals; they are the bonds that keep generations connected. This year, we wanted to spotlight the unsung heroes who make it all happen—the family anchors. They remind us that the true joy of Chinese New Year lies not just in the festivity, but in the care and love shared among family.”

The campaign was created in collaboration with Chariot Agency who once again teamed up with Directors Think Tank for the production of this film, this time with Hyrul Anuar at the director’s chair. His ability to blend humor into a story filled with a lot of heart made him the perfect choice for this year’s Chinese New Year campaign, reinforcing TNB’s tradition of festive ads that make Malaysians laugh, added Fong.

The film is available on TNB's YouTube, LinkedIn and TikTok.

For Deepavali last year, TNB's film "Arulini, Shining Star," focused on tradition, love, and the significance of light. The storyline draws on the real-life experiences of Malaysian singer Arulini Arumugam, recognised internationally through singing competitions. The film weaved in elements from the Thirukkural, an important Tamil text by poet Thiruvalluvar, known for its couplets offering ethical and practical life guidance.

Tenaga Nasional indicated that the film aligns with its belief in hope, perseverance, and familial bonds, underscoring the narrative's connection with the company's goal of inspiring individuals toward bright, sustainable future
