TikTok looks into partnerships with eCommerce firms following Indonesia ban

Social media platform TikTok has reportedly started to look into securing possible partnerships with Indonesian eCommerce companies, followingly shortly after the nation has declared a ban for online shopping on social media platforms. According to Reuters, Teten Masduki, minister for small-medium enterprises (SMEs) said that the social media company has spoken to five companies in regard to the matter, inclusive of GoTo's eCommerce unit (GOTO.JK) Tokopedia, Bukalapak.com (BUKA.JK) and Blibli (BELI.JK).

Teten told media outlets that he has plans to meet with TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew later this month, stating his objective to discuss and have the company commit to a sustainable business that has domestic SME products in mind.

In September this year, the Indonesian government put in place a regulation to ban social media companies from facilitating sales of products on their platforms. It was implemented in hopes to protect and support smaller merchants and enterprises, and also to ensure that the data of its users are protected.

TikTok was then asked to close its e-commerce service shop in Indonesia in compliance of the decision, affecting the 125 million users in the country. The company also reportedly met with Malaysian authorities earlier this year to discuss about the platform adhering to Malaysian laws and being more proactive with the spread of disinformation.

The discussion will follow communications and digital minister, Fahmi Fadzil’s recent meeting with TikTok global vice president Helena Lersch about the spread of fake news on the platform.

TikTok must operate according to Malaysian guidelines and laws while being more proactive in curbing the spread of fake news and defamatory material which includes coordinated inauthentic behavior, said Fahmi in a statement on X after his meeting with Lersch.
