Over 1,000 drones lit up the sky over Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour on Monday to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival and showcase Chinese tradition to locals and tourists.

Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), it began with an aerial display of glittering rice dumplings (糉子) filling the sky, which then quickly transformed into a dragon boat drummer cheering competitors in the upcoming dragon boat races.

Furthermore, the drone show featured a thrilling dragon boat racing across the sky, and a giant dragon flying on the oar of a dragon boat to send its blessings to the audience and remind them about the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races this weekend (15 and 16 June) on the Tsim Sha Tsui East promenade.

Crowds flocked to waterfronts across Hong Kong, such as Stanley, Sai Kung, Tai O, Aberdeen and Tuen Mun, to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. Hundreds cheered in Sai Kung yesterday as 115 teams from over 25 organisations competed in the district’s 32 dragon boat races, according to South China Morning Post.

Moreover, the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races will be staged on the Tsim Sha Tsui East promenade this weekend. More than 170 teams from 12 countries and regions will compete in 17 races with more teams and more participating countries and regions than last year, according to the HKTB.

At 8 pm on 15 June, the HKTB will stage a pyrotechnic display on the Wan Chai harbourfront featuring images of smiley faces and an Hong Kong monogram to enrich the city’s festive ambience and visitors’ experience.

To enhance the festivities and visitor experience, the HKTB will feature new season-limited LINE FRIENDS photo spots along the Avenue of Stars from 8 June to 1 July. Classic characters including Brown, Cony, and Sally will dress up as dragon boat athletes with a summer travel vibe.

This is not the first drone show from Hong Kong to boost tourism we have seen recently. Last month, Hong Kong staged over 1,000 drones to light up Victoria Harbour in the world’s first Doraemon drone show.

The show displayed images of characters from the popular manga series, including Doraemon, anywhere door (隨意門) and take-copter (竹蜻蜓). The 15-minute show also featured voiceovers by local voice actors.
