The Sandbox redefines UGC with Game Maker update
share on
The Sandbox has released its latest major platform update, Game Maker 0.11, marking a significant step in its long-term vision to empower creators and redefine user-generated content (UGC).
The update introduces advanced multiplayer capabilities, immersive gameplay mechanics, and enhanced tools, making it easier for creators and brands to build interactive digital worlds.
Arthur Madrid, CEO and co-founder of The Sandbox, highlighted the platform's mission: "Over 75 years after LEGO revolutionised physical play, we are doing the same for the digital world – developing a new language for creators to express themselves."
"The Sandbox is designed to give creators the freedom to push the boundaries of creativity, and with each update, we are enhancing their ability to bring their visions to life. We aim to continue giving creators the unique opportunity to collaborate with globally renowned brands across entertainment, fashion, music, sports, and more, allowing them to integrate iconic elements into their very own experiences like never before," he added.

Game Maker 0.11 enhances creation within The Sandbox ecosystem with new features designed to streamline development and improve engagement. Notable upgrades include enhanced multiplayer and racing mechanics, where the Movement Palette refines avatar interactions, offering a smoother experience for racing and platformer games. New Team Scores and improved NPCs allow for deeper multiplayer engagement.
Advanced immersion and customisation with improved character animations, updated camera systems, and avatar silhouettes refine gameplay visuals. Customisable HUDs, Control Maps, and faster load times ensure a seamless experience.
Meanwhile, New Partner Assets allow creators to integrate elements from renowned IPs such as The Smurfs, Chupa Chups, BLOND:ISH, Care Bears, and Atari. Future updates will introduce assets from Terminator 2042, Playboy, Madballs, Rabbids, MK2, and Jamiroquai.
To incentivise creators, The Sandbox is launching Builders Challenge 3, a six-week programme starting 26 February. Participants will earn SAND based on player engagement, with past top earners receiving over 60,000 SAND. More challenges are set for 2025, further supporting UGC development.
Looking ahead, The Sandbox plans to introduce matchmaking for competitive game modes, an advanced combat system for fighting games, and new traversal options such as mounts and vehicles, expanding the metaverse’s interactive possibilities.
