Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport is expecting its daily passenger traffic to reach a post-COVID record of 100,000 per day during the Qing Ming holiday from 31 March to 6 April.
The airport said in a statement that peak periods were expected to be the first and the final day of the holiday. If the peak exceeds 100,000 travellers, it will become a new high since lifting of travel restrictions last October, following the record of 83,000 passengers moving through the airport during New Year holiday.
Official figures showed 46,690 outbound travelers, 35,845 inbound passengers, and 15,756 transit passengers moving through the airport on 31 March, accounting for a total of 98,291 people using Taiwan’s busiest gateway. The outbound peak recorded 9,953 visitors from 6am to 1pm, and the second peak was 5,742 from 1pm to 4pm.
This comes as the Taiwanese government announced that Hong Kong and Macau tourists can enter Taiwan without any restrictions from 20 February onwards. The Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said that it has been collaborating with relevant departments to fast-track free travel for Hong Kong and Macau tourists. MAC has resumed processing entry applications for Hong Kong and Macau residents.
Most recently, the airport has decided to launch a new recruitment drive in May, looking to hire 45 employees with experiences in engineering, administration, transportation management and physical and mental disability service. Salaries will start at NT$36,000 per month, up to a maximum of NT$74,000.
The recruitment campaign comes as the airport is facing surging traffic amidst the lifting of covid restrictions. Taoyuan International Airport Corporation (TIAC) said that the passenger volume in March had reached 60% and flights 70% of the level in 2019. It added that the passenger volume in February this year was 2,028,972, which increased by 2,030% compared to the same period last year.

With details to be announced in late April, TIAC said that applicants must have relevant profession and working experience. Meanwhile, TIAC will also open 10 job places that not do not require any previous working experience. Applicants, including those with disabilities, will only be required to submit a relevant diploma and English-language certificate. The application process includes a written examination in mid-May and an oral test in mid-June.
