Ecommerce platform Shopee has joined in on the food delivery service hype with the launch of its food delivery vertical, ShopeeFood. While Shopee has not yet released an official launch, in a Facebook post posted at noon on 23 June on ShopeePayMY’s FaceBook page, the eCommerce platform said “We are looking for a ShopeeFood delivery partners in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor!”, along with a list of requirements.

Interested applicants have to be a Malaysian citizen aged 18 and above, and must have a motorcycle license (at least P License and above), a smartphone that supports iOS 10 or Android 4.4 and above, no past criminal records and no suspensions or bans on the Shopee platform.

Shopee then posted the same post as a tweet on Twitter later on at 8.59pm.

With this new venture, ShopeeFood joins the scene with established local competitors such as Grabfood, Lalamove, foodpanda and even airasia, which also recently expanded into fresh food delivery as part of its businesses in its superapp. Shopee has declined to respond to A+M's queries but may update with an official comment in the near future.

ShopeeFood’s Malaysian launch follows its entry into Indonesia since April last year. The ecommerce platform followed a similar modus operandi, beginning with a social media post for recruitment before officially launching through a 30-second introduction video.

Earlier this month, ShopeeFood Indonesia also announced that it was expanding to cover more cities in an Instagram post. The service is now also available in Bandung, Jogja, Surabaya, and surrounding areas.

According to Kompas, the ecommerce’s platform is the first ecommerce platform to have its own food delivery service in Indonesia. It challenges local competitors GrabFood and Gojek’s GoFood.

On a related note, there has been a slew of recent initiatives by mobile applications to diversify its platforms through superapps aside from airasia’s airasia.com. Grab also launched four new services namely hotel booking, video streaming, ticket purchasing and trip planning services on its app in April 2019. Shopee’s ecommerce competitor Lazada, also partnered up with ComfortDelgro to allow shoppers to book ComfortDelGro cabs within the Lazada app earlier this year in April.
