Sarawak allocates RM10m to form overseas trade and tourism offices

Sarawak has assigned RM10 million to its Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Singapore as part of the state's Budget 2023. The funds will also be used to set up similar offices in Brunei and Indonesia's Pontianak next year, Bernama reported quoting Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He explained that the launch of these offices is among the series of initiatives under the budget's strategic thrusts to transform Sarawak into a competitive economy. The state is also looking to draw foreign investment and tourists with the foreign trade and tourism offices.

Aside from the RM10 million, RM7 million has also been set aside for Invest Sarawak, Bernama said, which is a one-stop investment information centre to promote the state globally to attract foreign direct investment. At the same time, RM5 million will go towards the Go Digital programme in 2023 to groom digitally savvy SMEs in Sarawak and aid them in marketing their products and services via eCommerce.

Abang Johari also announced the allocation of RM14 million to micro-credit and small and medium industry loan scehemes, as well as RM18 million for the Special Relief Fund, Targeted Relief and Recovery Facility and the National Economic Recovery Plan Tourism Fund.

Separately, Abang Johari's party Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) won big during the recent General Election, securing 23 seats. GPS comprises Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, Parti Rakyat Sarawak, Sarawak United People’s Party, an d Progressive Democratic Party. It contested in all 31 parliamentary seats in Sarawak.
