Malaysia and the Philippines look to tighten relationships to grow digital economy

Malaysia and the Philippines are further exploring cooperation in various sectors in order to build their bilateral relationship. PM Anwar said in a joint press briefing with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr seen by A+M, that among the areas for further collaboration were sectors such as the halal industry, food security and digital economy.
Among other issues discussed, PM Anwar spoke of building people-to-people ties between Malaysia and the Philippines in order to help grow its cultural exchanges and tourism sector. President Marcos added that the two cultures enjoy a natural affinity to each other, acknowledging the significance of the Philippine diaspora in Malaysia and its contribution to both economies. Moreover, being founding members of the ASEAN federation, he noted that Asian centrality is built into both their global outlooks.

This comes shortly after PM Anwar delivered the 2023 budget, wherein he allocated RM 250million to promote the tourism sector. He said in his speech that the total allocation for the budget aligned with what he deemed ‘Visit Malaysia Year’ in 2025, which targets and 23.5 million international tourists and a projected influx revenue of RM 76.8 billion.
Additionally, in a bid to expand its healthcare tourism plans, Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council also announced a one-stop portal for healthcare travellers earlier this year. The portal is set to give international healthcare travellers easy access to anything related to healthcare travelling.
