Grab Malaysia has reportedly started testing a new fare bidding feature for passengers in an attempt to get them to propose their ideal ride prices to drivers.

Drivers will have the ability to reject or make a counteroffer with the passenger, a feature that will be optional for both parties, according to The Star.

Prior to the booking, the passenger will suggest a price that they are willing to pay for the ride.

Drivers, who have turned on the feature, will then have 15 seconds to accept the offer or make another offer. Passengers will then be able to choose their preferred ride based on the different offers received and the selected driver will then be notified.

A handful of users have also reportedly received notifications regarding the new feature in GrabAcademy, which is a learning feature in the Grab driver-partners app.

Grab reportedly said that the feature is currently in its testing phase and that it is conducting a small sale experiment in selected towns in Malaysia.

The company added that it hopes the new feature will allow for more interaction between passengers and drivers, promoting more transparency thorough mutual agreements. The move, if successful, will help Grab move toward a more flexible pricing system.

According to The Star, fixed fare features such as JustGrab and GrabCar will still be available.

Grab has also taken action to reinforce the breadth and diversity of the food selections that users in Southeast Asia can enjoy on Grab.

Dishes such as Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng, Siamese boat noodles, and crispy Sisig have taken over Grab’s billboards on the Nasdaq Tower in Times Square as the brand looks to give 53 homegrown merchants a global stage.

Other local dishes include Prata from Singapore, Nasi Campur from Indonesia, and Bánh Mì from Vietnam. Malaysia’s Village Park Restaurant, Thailand’s Thong Smith, and the Philippines’ Jollibee were among the merchants featured.

This comes as awareness among international travellers of the brand’s food offering grows, with a reported all-time high in Deliveries Gross Merchandise Value in Q3 2023.
