TIME and OpenAI have partnered for a multi-year content deal and strategic partnership to bring TIME's journalism to OpenAI’s products, including ChatGPT.
OpenAI will gain access to TIME's extensive archives from the last 101 years to enhance its products and display in response to user inquiries. It will feature a citation and link back to the original source on Time.com. It said that this partnership will help expand global access to accurate and trusted information.

"We’re partnering with TIME to make it easier for people to access news content through our AI tools, and to support reputable journalism by providing proper attribution to original sources,” said Brad Lightcap, chief Operating Officer of OpenAI in a statement.
Similarly, TIME will also gain access to OpenAI's technology to develop new products for its audiences, as well as providing feedback and sharing practical applications to refine the delivery of journalism in ChatGPT and other OpenAI products.
"Throughout our 101-year history, TIME has embraced innovation to ensure that the delivery of our trusted journalism evolves alongside technology," said TIME chief operating officer Mark Howard. "This partnership with OpenAI advances our mission to expand access to trusted information globally as we continue to embrace innovative new ways of bringing TIME’s journalism to audiences globally.”
A study by Reuters Institute found that audiences tend to have different comfort levels for AI in news. Most start with resistance and suspicion, especially towards the use of generative AI in producing journalism. Audiences are more comfortable when AI is used to aid journalistic practice in more behind-the-scenes ways, such as through automating transcriptions or formatting.
Nevertheless, TIME is far from being the only news source OpenAI has established a partnership with. Last month, OpenAI signed content deals with The Atlantic and Vox Media, as reported by Reuters.
News Corp and ChatGPT developer OpenAI also entered strategic agreement to allow OpenAI to display content from News Corp mastheads in response to user questions.
In a statement made at the time, News Corp expressed it would give OpenAI access to current and archived content from News Corp’s major news and information publications. These include The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch, New York Post, The Times and The Daily Telegraph to name a few.
