Online travel companies are the most popular option for travellers in Indonesia, according to a recent survey by YouGov. The survey also found that travel platform Traveloka was the most popular amongst Indonesian travellers who were looking to perform mudik which is the act of travelling back to their hometowns over Ramadan.

The survey found that than two in five consumers who observe Ramadan plan to perform mudik with a third planning not to and just over a fifth being undecided.

When asked when they plan to perform mudik, YouGov found that two in five, or 45%, typically do it two to six days before Eid al-Fitr which will fall on 22 April. This makes it the most popular period for mudik travel, said YouGov in a release. It added that next most popular dates are at the time of Eid at 14% and two to six days after Eid at 13%.

When it comes to what travel booking methods Indonesians prefer, it would seem that online travel companies are the most popular with three in five consumers or 57% saying that they purchased their mudik transport tickets over the web from online travel companies this year.

42% purchased their tickets directly at stations or terminals while 27% used offline travel agents and 19% on the websites of transport providers.

The survey also found that among those who purchased their mudik transport tickets from online travel companies this year, Jakarta-based Traveloka at 42% and Tiket.com at 35% emerged as the most popular providers.

The two most popular foreign-origin providers were Amsterdam-based Booking.com at 11% and Singapore-based Agoda at 9%, which are third and fifth most popular overall this Ramadan.

The survey comes as travel platforms look towards artificial intelligence to better their offerings for travelers. Recently, Expedia announced that members can now start open-ended conversations in the Expedia app and get recommendations on places to go, where to stay, how to get around, and what to see and do based on the chat.

The new offering also allows travellers to bring in intelligent shopping by automatically saving hotels discussed in the conversation to a “trip” in the app, helping members stay organised and making it easier for them to start choosing dates, checking availability, and adding on flights, cars or activities, according to Expedia.

The collaboration with OpenAI is currently in the beta testing phase, allowing Expedia to evolve the experience based on how members interact with it.
