The Malaysian government is introducing new social media rules and regulations that will tackle crime and create a safer environment for users.

In a Facebook post, prime minister Anwar Ibrahim said that the evolution of technology requires that all users, especially digital users, adhere to high standards of conduct to avoid sensitivities that could threaten peace and security on social media platforms.

The minister said this during his address at the MADANI Feast event in Taman Koperasi Perpaduan 2, Tambun, Perak, earlier on Monday (29 July).

Anwar added that the new rules on social media and internet messaging services that the government is about to introduce are to overcome the spread of crime and dangerous information, while creating a safe environment for all users.

He said that the government is aware that there may be some unpopular restrictions or rules but emphasised that it is necessary for the sake of the community.

Last week, the communications ministry said that it will be taking action against several social media platforms to address cyberbullying.

Speaking to media at the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2024 launch ceremony on 21 July, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said social media platforms don't take issues that Malaysia is currently facing seriously.

The decision to take action comes after discussions with three other ministries, namely the digital ministry, the home ministry and the prime minister's department.

Following which, the ministries will be collaborating to examine three to four specific issues related to the matter. One of the issues includes updating existing laws and ensuring that they are implemented effectively.
