A Malaysian police band has gone viral for its performance of a Cantonese hit made by Beyond, a rock band hailing from Hong Kong.

According to The Star, the all-Malay police band was given a standing ovation by customers at Penang shopping complex for singing the song “Hai Kuo Tian Kong”.  The event at the shopping mall was reportedly meant to create awareness about scams.

The band played the song live, accompanied by their instruments as seen in a video posed by an audience member, which resulted in the band receiving a standing ovation at the end.

The Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation’s chairman, Ong Poh Eng was present at the event, along with his secretary Johnny Michael Tan. Tan told The Star that the event hoped to bring awareness to the public that they should be more wary of scams and not fall victim to them. Alongside the Malaysian police, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has also ramped up its efforts over the year to minimise the prevalence of scams in the country.

For instance, earlier this year in March, MCMC’s minister Fahmi Fadzil, met with Telegram to discuss the safety of its users. This was due to Telegram’s history of scams which had been recognised in Malaysia since a few months prior.

Fahmi has also noted that the total losses incurred by Malaysians from January 2020 to May 2023 from various fraudulent activities on Telegram has amounted to RM45 million. He reiterated his firm view that messaging and social media platforms are to adhere by Malaysian laws.
