Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil reportedly told messaging providers WhatsApp and Telegram to be more responsible in ensuring that no criminal activities are committed on the platforms.

He said that WhatsApp was found to be widely misused for the purpose of sexual grooming while the government has received complaints from former and current ministers about threats and scams on Telegram, according to Bernama.

Speaking at a press conference, the minister reportedly said the problem with Telegram is that it allegedly involves the misuse of accounts for pornography and the sale of prohibited substances such as drugs.

The minister reportedly added that the issues involving the two platforms are already under scrutiny by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

In addition, appropriate action will be taken to ensure that the apps and social media are safe for the community to use, Fahmi reportedly said.

If the platforms refuse to make sure their platform is free from criminal elements, the government will make sure they comply with the laws in the country, Fahmi reportedly said.

WhatsApp and Telegram are not the only platforms to receive stern warnings from the Malaysian government.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the communications ministry will be taking action against several social media platforms to address cyberbullying

The decision to take action comes after discussions with three other ministries, namely the digital ministry, the home ministry and the prime minister's department.

Following which, the ministries will be collaborating to examine three to four specific issues related to the matter. One of the issues includes updating existing laws and ensuring that they are implemented effectively.
