Malaysia’s communications and digital minister, Fahmi Fadzil has said that Malaysia is entering its golden digital decade and that the country is focusing on strengthening its 5G infrastructure with the support of global leaders such as Ericsson which has set up its equipment manufacturing plant in Malaysia. Fahmi said this in a speech read out by his deputy, Teo Nie Ching at the inauguration of Ericsson’s 5G equipment manufacturing facility.
According to Bernama, he added that Ericsson will also be boosting its local manufacturing capabilities and nurturing a strong ecosystem which will push the development of new and innovative 5G services.

5G has been a focal point of conversation in the digital space in Malaysia, with Minister Fahmi placing much focus on the country’s 5G capabilities. He added in his speech, as reported by Bernama that Malaysia’s 5G network coverage is now at 64.7% of populated areas, with 5289 5G towers built nationwide as of end June this year.
Additionally, he stated that Malaysia has also emerged on top in median 5G download speeds across markets in the APAC region, which has had a domino effect on the country’s local businesses, while Malaysian consumers and enterprises are set to benefit directly from the increased speed and higher reliability of the network.
Earlier this year, Ericsson signed a memorandum of understanding with tech firm, Intel on the development of 5G use cases that can accelerate digitalisation as well as spur the adoption of the new technology by enterprises in Malaysia.
They collaborated on their respective technology expertise to show how communications service providers (CSPs) can accelerate 5G adoption and expand their business-to-business (B2B) engagements based on 5G use-cases. Amongst the areas identified for collaboration was the joint development of enterprise use cases in selected verticals such as manufacturing, transport and logistics. In addition, it involves working on the benefits of digitalisation for emerging economies and the role 5G connectivity can play in building sustainable and resilient digital economies.
David Hägerbro, head of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, said at the time that 5G is a platform for innovation and will transform the way enterprises operate. "Ericsson’s collaboration with Intel in Malaysia will contribute to the adoption of 5G and development of the local ecosystem that will in turn drive Malaysia’s digital transformation."
He added that this will also ensure the country has a distinct advantage compared to other markets in the region when it comes to foreign investment.
In other news regarding 5G developments in Malaysia, Malaysian telecommunications company, Maxis’ subsidiary, Maxis Broadband planned to execute the access agreement for Maxis to gain access to 5G products and services provided by Digital Nasional (DNB). According to a filing on Bursa Malayisa, Maxis believed that it would be in the company’s best interest to enter into this access agreement, especially since the government’s announcement that the implementation of the 5G network in Malaysia will continue through DNB until it reaches 80% coverage in populated areas by the end of 2023 under its initial rollout phase.
