Malaysian golf retailer, MST Golf, is looking to expand its presence in Southeast Asia with the planned opening of more retail stores in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
It recently opened its first MST Golf Arena outlet in Jakarta, Indonesia, this month. According to a press release seen by MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, the opening signifies the company’s strategic foray into the burgeoning golf industry in Indonesia, solidifying its position as the most comprehensive golf service provider in the region.

The business in Indonesia will be managed by MST Golf and Indonesian retailer, Erajaya Active Lifestyle (ERAL). It will provide a range of retail, indoor golf, golf academy, club fitting, and F&B services. This would include the introduction of 59 leading golf brands, such as TaylorMade, Puma, G/FORE, adidas, and ASICS.
Under the joint venture with Erajaya Active Lifestyle, MST Golf and Erajaya Active Lifestyle will hold ownership of 51% and 49% shareholdings in MST Golf Indonesia respectively.
"Leveraging ERAL's expertise in the retail and distribution of active lifestyle products in Indonesia, coupled with MST Golf's experience in golf retail, MST Golf's presence in Indonesia aims to deliver a cutting-edge golfing experience with high-quality products for the Indonesian community," it said.
"The launch of MST Golf Arena marks our inaugural retail store in Indonesia, and this is just the beginning of an exciting journey as we move forward on our regional expansion plan," said Ng Yap, MST Golf’s executive director and group chief executive officer.
"We have plans to open more outlets in the near future, aiming to serve more golf enthusiasts and attract new golfers into the scene across our outlets, providing a world-class golf retail experience," he added.
In a statement to MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, MST Golf said that it currently has identified five other locations in Indonesia for its new outlets this year. It added that there will be more retail stores in Malaysia as well, along with upgrading for its in-store experiences to cater to the growing golfing market.
Following its initial public offering (IPO) listing on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia in July 2023, MST Golf's primary focus for 2024 will be to cater to what it views as an underserved golfing community in the region.
It also stated that it will be looking to continue its retail presence in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam within the next two years.
"90% of our IPO proceeds will go towards funding our expansion plans locally in Malaysia and Singapore, as well as new geographical markets –Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam," it added.
In the wake of the pandemic, businesses across sectors have looked towards expansion amidst better economic outlooks. The news follows recent reports that McDonald’s Malaysia is looking to expand its fleet of outlets to 750 nationwide by 2030. The brand reportedly has 370 restaurants across Malaysia currently, with 32 new outlets opened in 2023.
The planned expansion is reportedly targeted to take place in suburban or rural areas such as Gemas, Rasah, and Mambau to meet customer demands, provide easier access to customers, and broaden job opportunities for local communities.
