MR D.I.Y Group has carried out an uplift for Zoo Melaka including the refurbishment of the ape and terrapin compounds, the installation of informational signage, and upgrade of some of the general facilities. The retailer also contributed four sets of new benches for the use of visitors at the 59-year-old zoo.
The #DIY4Zoo initiative is one of MR D.I.Y's many community outreach activities to help organisations and communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this year, the retailer completed a few initiatives in an effort to help Zoo Negara, which included animal adoption, improving and upkeeping the zoo facilities, and contributing hardware tools, equipment, and uniforms for the zoo’s employees. A+M has reached out to Zoo Melaka for additional information.
MR D.I.Y's spokesperson said it is a Malaysian business with a nationwide presence, and it believes in promoting a deep appreciation for its nation’s rich diversity. "It is very much a part of our efforts to build a sustainable business that adds value to the lives of Malaysians," the spokesperson added.
The spokesperson also said that Zoo Melaka is a long-established, iconic landmark, and a must-visit for locals and tourists alike when they come to this historic town. "It is important that we support tourist hotspots such as this, to protect our heritage and to help local communities thrive. We hope many other businesses will come forward to do the same,” said the spokesperson.
Zoo Melaka's director, Zanariah Khamis, added that MR D.I.Y. is the first major corporate organisation to help the zoo with the refurbishment of the animal compounds, and it hopes this will set an example for many more to do so. According to Zanariah, the 54-acre zoo is the second largest in Malaysia, and is currently being transformed into an open-concept animal exhibit, which will enhance wildlife education, animal breeding and conservation efforts.
"This in turn will provide people of all ages, from young children through to university students and the elderly, a safe and informative space to learn about what nature has to offer. We thank MR D.I.Y for their generous contribution," Zanariah said.
Separately on the financial front, MR D.I.Y's revenue for the third quarter of 2022 rose 25.8% year-on-year to RM966.2 million, primarily attributable positive same-store sales growth and increase in the total number of stores.
The group's store network grew 23.4% in Q3 2022, from 841 to 1,038 stores, leading to a corresponding 40.1% y-o-y increase in total transactions to 35.8 million. The increase also reflects the impact of lockdown measures in Q# 2021 that led to a temporary closure of some stores and lower overall traffic.
The group said in November that it remains confident of its ability to deliver long-term sustainable growth premised on the underlying strength of the business, strong unit economics of flagship MR D.I.Y stores, and the progress it is making on new store growth. The gorup aims to open at least 180 new stores in 2023.
