Mister Potato, a brand under MAMEE-Double Decker, has brought on board footballer Neymar Jr. as its regional brand ambassador. The appointment was made known on the brand's social media channels earlier this month. It covers Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, South Asia countries, Middle East countries and Oceania countries.
This new partnership – Mister Potato x NR Sports – is the next phase of Mister Potato’s 30th-anniversary celebration and collaboration with celebrities, where the first phase started earlier this year. This campaign introduces “The Ridiculous Kick” theme and will run for a year with Neymar Jr. as its key feature. Mister Potato will also be releasing two limited edition flavours - BBQ Kebab and Hot Salsa.
How Yuan Yi, CMO of MAMEE-Double Decker, said Neymar Jr. is an amazing individual whose talent in the beautiful game is greatly respected. He is also well-known for his work on and off the football pitch where he has used his influence to make a positive impact globally.
“His outstanding personality and active and adventurous lifestyle make him the perfect match for our brand. We are looking forward to kicking off some exciting activities over the next few weeks and are ready to meet the snacking demands of football fans as they gear up to watch the World Cup matches,” How added.
When asked about the partnership ROI, Mister Potato said it hopes to take the brand to a global level with an international footballer, leveraging on the craze of the upcoming World Cup.
Meanwhile, Neymar Jr. said: “I’m very happy to be Mister Potato's new ambassador, even more so in an important year in my career. I had a lot of fun doing the campaign and I’m really enjoying the products." Mister Potato is also running the Snek & Menang Contest until 27 November which gives football fans a chance to win a trip to Qatar, PUMA merchandise and cash prizes worth more than RM138,000.
Among the other brands Neymar Jr. has worked with include Nike, McDonald's, Red Bull, TCL and Beats by Dre. Meanwhile, Neymar Jr. is not the first footballer that Mister Potato has worked with. In 2013, it partnered with now-retired footballer Wayne Rooney and featured him in its marketing campaign in Malaysia, The Guardian reported.
Separately, the brand also appointed K-pop artist Cha Eun-woo as its regional ambassador in March this year as part of its 30th-anniversary celebration. Done in partnership with CJ ENM Hong Kong, the partnership spanned Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand, leveraging the popularity of Korean culture and music in the region. Cha is a member of Korean boyband Astro.
