Minister Fahmi Fadzil highlights need for international collaboration against cyber threats

Communication and digital minister, Fahmi Fadzil has called for greater international collaboration for cybersecurity to responsibly protect the cyberspace and digital economy of each country at London Tech Week this week. 

Speaking at the transformation stage, Minister Fahmi said that as the cyber domain transcends geographical boundaries, international collaboration is an area of concern according to Bernama.

He stressed that technology developers and businesses should put security at the forefront in its digital transformation projects with the aim of protecting the digital community against cybersecurity threats.

It was also revealed that Malaysia will host the Cyber Defence and Security Asia Expo and Conference and establish the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) as a response towards cyber threats, according to media reports.

At London Tech Week, Malaysia also secured RM8.3 billion worth of investment commitments in various digital technology sectors as reported by Bernama.

Sunway Group signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the International Data Centre Authority (IDCA) that aims to provide 1,800 high-value job opportunities.

During the event, a MoU was also signed with Wippd along with investment announcements made by nine companies from the UK that include Access Group, Dataswyft and Hamilton.

The report also stated that MDEC will collaborate with UK-Asean Business Council (UKABC), and the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council.

Last month, Fahmi also reiterated the importance of news outlets being treated fairly by social media platforms.

Reported by The Star, he stated that there needs to be greater unity between media organisations and social media platform operators, especially at the organisational level.

After a dialogue with members of the state media fraternity, reported by The Star as well, Fahmi told reporters that he hopes for a stronger relationship with social media operators in order to facilitate freer and amicable discussions.
