McDonald's X Crocs collab lands in HK to surprise Gen Alpha

The McDonald's and Crocs collaboration series is finally arriving in Hong Kong, leveraging nostalgic and fun elements to create keychain toys for children and families.  

Starting today, McDonald's Hong Kong will be releasing 10 different Happy Meal keychain toys in collaboration with Crocs. These toys transform the classic Crocs Clogs into mini keychain toys, which are fun and sure to be trendy accessories for everyday outfits.  

Inspired by the Happy Meal box, it features McDonald's iconic red and yellow colors with the iconic smile drawn from Happy Meal box on the shoe, evoking happy childhood memories of enjoying a Happy Meal.

Some accessories are themed around McDonald's food items, such as the Big Mac Crocs Toy, Fries Crocs Toy, and Chicken McNuggets Crocs Toy, allowing McDonald's food lovers to recall the joyful taste of their favourite treats.

Targeting new and existing McDonald’s Happy Meal fans, especially Gen Alpha and their families, the partnership aims to create a cultural moment that fosters lifelong McDonald’s fandom, reinforcing McDonald's position as a beloved and admired brand, said Tina Chao, chief marketing and digital customer officer of McDonald’s Hong Kong in a conversation with MARKETING-INTERACTIVE.  

Available from 27 September to 24 October, the partnership provides an opportunity for Gen Alpha to express their individuality and fandom through a fashion-inspired, creative and playful experience that further elevates McDonald's Happy Meal platform, added Chao.  

Customers can express their unique style with ten exclusive Crocs keychain toys, each packaged in its own Happy Meal shoe box, along with a special Jibbitz sticker sheet for customisation.  

Additionally, customers can scan a QR code on the box to access a digital experience where they can mix and match elements to create their own personalised shoe designs.    

The McDonald's Happy Meal box itself has been redesigned to feature Crocs artwork and logos, further enriching this cultural collaboration. 

Done in collaboration with creative agency DDB Group Hong Kong and media agency OMD Hong Kong, the partnership is promoted via various platforms such as TV commercials, and social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Digital banners and McDonald’s app are also leveraged. 

Chao said: "This cross-category collaboration with Crocs signifies a dynamic fusion of fun and creativity, enabling us to further connect with Gen Alpha  and their families. The Crocs keychain toy is inspired by various McDonald's iconic food items and Happy Meal boxes, combining nostalgic and fun elements of McDonald's with Crocs classic clogs.” 

“This results in vibrant and playful keychain toys that can complement different everyday outfits, while allowing fans of McDonald's to relive happy memories associated with their favourite foods anytime, anywhere,” she added.
