Mattel is expanding its Indonesian plants to support the increased production capacity for Mattel’s Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars. This comes as part of its 30th anniversary, and is expected to create approximately 2,500 new jobs in Indonesia in addition to the nearly 9,000 employees working in Mattel’s Indonesian plants during peak season.
“We’re proud to celebrate and reaffirm our long-term presence in Indonesia through this expansion of our manufacturing operations,” said Roy Tandean, VP and GM of Mattel in Indonesia. “Indonesia holds an important role in our global operations and supports our transformation strategy for growth as an IP-driven, high-performing toy company. This expansion also strengthens Indonesia's role as a leading producer in the toy industry globally.”
On average, the dolls that Mattel makes in Indonesia are comprised of an estimated 70% local content. As a result of this expansion and increased production capacity, Mattel plans to increase purchase volumes from local partners for textiles and packaging products in Cikarang and Central Java.
Accoding to Mattel, its Indonesia outfit produces more Barbie dolls than any other plant in the world, and Mattel’s local production currently represents more than 35% of Indonesia’s total global toy exports.
Mattel’s expansion received a warm welcome from the Indonesian Government. The Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, said, “Mattel's new investment creates many new possibilities for the Indonesian industry, including how it can further develop the manufacturing capabilities of small and medium industries, and continue supporting industrial modernization by implementing Industry 4.0.”
