Malaysia has been ranked number one globally for 5G consistency score with a score of 97.2%.

At the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2024 (MWC2024) earlier this week, global leader in network intelligence and connectivity insights Ookla named Malaysia as the global winner among countries which had successfully launched 5G commercially.

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil was present to accept the award presented by Ookla chief executive officer Stehen Bye.

The Consistency score is Ookla's method of measuring speed where it has to satisfy both download and upload criteria of 25Mbps and 3Mbps respectively.

"This achievement not only proves Malaysia's commitment to technological advancement, but also reflects the concerted efforts by the telecommunications industry, regulatory bodies and government agencies to build a robust and reliable 5G infrastructure," Fahmi wrote on X.

Currently, Malaysia is ahead of North Macedonia (94.06%) and the United Arab Emirates (93.88%).

Fahmi reportedly said that being ranked number one was not just about boasting rights, but about unlocking the full potential of this game-changing technology to drive economic growth, enhance social welfare and foster a more inclusive society.

According to media reports, Fahmi said that the Malaysian government is poised to accelerate innovation across various sectors from healthcare and education to manufacturing and agriculture.

In addition, the minister reportedly said that a 5G network serves as the backbone for transformative technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). This, Fahmi reportedly said, redefines the way Malaysians live, work and interact.

Fahmi has been on the forefront for 5G adoption in Malaysia. In October 2023, the minister reportedly called for local businesses to adopt 5G technology as digitalisation continues to grow globally.

The minister reportedly warned that those who do not adopt 5G technology risk being left behind, as 5G plays a key role in other developed countries around the world, according to The Star.

Minister Fahmi made these comments at the CelcomDigi MY5G Conference and Tech Showcase 2023 where he added that other countries have implemented 5G technology and solutions across their industries to positive outcomes.
