The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has reportedly launched an investigation into 2022’s ‘Keluarga Malaysia’ campaign for alleged corruption links to former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

As a result of the investigation, contracts awarded for the campaign’s promotional materials, such as billboards, have been under scrutiny, according to Malaysiakini.

Investigations into the campaign are part of MACC’s wider investigation of the government's RM700mil expenditure on advertising, promotions and publicity efforts from 2020 to 2022, according to media reports.

The government has been required to disclose the amount spent on media platforms which include print, digital and television in response to a question by Batu’s member of parliament Prabakaran Parameswaran at the Dewan Rakyat in November last year.

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil, former communications and digital minister, has expressed support for the transparency of the government funds spent on advertising.

The people have a right to know how this RM700mil has been spent, whether everything is properly recorded or if there are illegal transactions, he said in a post in Bahasa on X.

Minister Fahmi has also told media reporters that it is the right of investigative bodies to conduct investigations should the need arise and that MACC has not yet requested his ministry to assist in the investigations.

News of the investigation comes shortly after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's cabinet reshuffle last month where the Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) reportedly split into the Communications Ministry and the Digital Ministry.

Helming the new Digital Ministry is Gobind Singh Deo who served as the former Communications and Multimedia Minister from 2018 to 2020. Ugak Anak Kumbong has also reportedly been appointed as the deputy digital minister.
