As AI reshapes the workforce and businesses adapt to shifting economic and political conditions, professionals are prioritising a mix of technical expertise and human-centric abilities to stay competitive.
According to LinkedIn’s 2025 Skills on the Rise report, AI literacy is the fastest-growing skill among Australian professionals, with hiring for AI-related roles surging 240% over the past eight years. However, soft skills like strategic thinking, adaptability and conflict resolution are emerging as equally critical in an evolving job market.
LinkedIn predicts that 70% of job skills will change by 2030, driven by the rapid adoption of AI across industries, a shifting political and economic climate, increased return-to-office mandates and growing demand for cross-functional and problem-solving skills.
With three in five Australians looking for a new job in 2025, according to LinkedIn data, understanding these trends is key for both job seekers and employers navigating the changing labour market.
The report highlights a clear blend of AI, business strategy, and interpersonal skills shaping the future workforce. AI literacy, large language model proficiency, and statistical data analysis reflect the growing importance of automation, machine learning, and data-driven decision-making in modern workplaces.
At the same time, skills like communication, adaptability and conflict resolution are rising as employers seek professionals who can collaborate, think critically, and navigate uncertainty.
LinkedIn Career Expert Cayla Dengate said that while AI is reshaping industries, human skills remain critical for professionals to stand out in a competitive job market.
“Nearly three in five (59%) Australians are looking for a new job in 2025, but 41% don't know how to match their skills to roles. With a tightening job market, knowing which skills are in demand can help job seekers stand out to hiring managers,” Dengate said.
She noted that 87% of Australian professionals already use AI tools at work, making it essential for job seekers to understand how AI is transforming roles.
“Your job is changing, even if you’re not changing jobs. AI is elevating the value of human-centric abilities, with soft skills showing up strongly in LinkedIn’s Skills on the Rise list,” she added.
While AI-related skills like large language model proficiency are increasingly sought after, skills such as conflict resolution, leadership, and customer service management remain highly relevant as businesses look for employees who can drive collaboration and innovation.
