Kelvin Sim moves on from Redbeat Academy to join Star Media Group

Star Media Group has brought on board Kelvin Sim as GM, digital sales, client brand marketing. While Star Media Group confirmed his appointment, it did not comment further on his role. Sim (pictured) was most recently commercial director at Redbeat Academy, a role he held for close to a year.

Redbeat Academy was formed through a collaboration between AirAsia Digital and Waze's parent firm Google. It was created to upskill and cross-train AirAsia employees on AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, big data, and software engineering, and officially opened its doors to the public last October.

Before that, he was with Waze Malaysia as country lead, a role he held for close to three years. He joined the team from Mediabrands where he was GM of Society before it was folded under Reprise in 2018. He also helmed a variety of marketing roles - head of digital services and activation, marketing at Digi; deputy head, marketing and business development at Tune Talk; and AVP, retail marketing at CIMB Bank. Sim was also previously with InMobi as sales lead for Malaysia and head, brand advertising - Malaysia and Vietnam.

Star Media Group witnessed a 12% revenue increase for print and digital during the second quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year mainly due to the reopening of economic activities, which has led to the increase demand for advertisements. This segment recorded a loss before tax of RM0.46 million in the second quarter commpared to the loss before tax of RM39.15 million during the same period last year.

The Group is continuing its efforts in retaining and sustaining its investments in its digital transformation initiatives and strategies with various digitally-driven product such as The Star Online, mStar and the BM news portal, Majoriti. The Group is also leveraging its existing assets to continuously look for various opportunities that generate synergistic benefits and strengthen all its existing products.
